The 6-foot-3 senior guard scored 50 points, including the basket that sent the game to overtime with 2.7 seconds left in regulation, and Buford posted a 95-84 comeback victory over Hillcrest of Simpsonville, S.C. in the Jared Cook Tip-Off Classic to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure at North Gwinnett.
#“I’ve never had anyone score like that,” coach Allen Whitehart said. “That was really something. Tre’s special.”
#Hansbrough scored 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Wolves (3-0) came back from a 12-point deficit and then added eight points in overtime.
#The transfer from Centennial hit eight 3-pointers – one he converted into a four-point play in the fourth quarter – and finished 18 of 20 from the foul line. He was 8-for-8 in overtime.
#“I tried to put the team on my back and carry it,” Hansbrough said. “I wasn’t going to let us lose.”
#Hansbrough, who averaged about 15 points at Centennial, had 32 points in his Buford debut on Saturday and followed that up with 26 on Monday.
#Against Hillcrest, he went well past either of those strong efforts.
#“I’ve never had a game like this,” he said. “I guess I was in a zone.”
#Hansbrough had 19 points in the first half as Buford took a 34-28 lead. But Hillcrest, playing its first game, scored the first 15 points of the third quarter and led 61-49 midway in the fourth.
#Then Hansbrough took over.
#In the last minute, Hansbrough had 11 points and tied the game at 77 on a drive, sending the game to overtime.
#Taylor Mills, also a senior guard, had 24 points for Buford, including six in overtime.
#Tyler Hooker of Hillcrest almost matched Hansbrough. The senior guard who has signed with East Tennessee State fouled out in overtime having scored 39 points.
