FORT MYERS — Rex Pflueger, HoopScoops No. 56 senior in the nation, couldn’t get a last-second layup to fall, as Santa Ana (Calif.)-Mater Dei fell to Fairfax (Va.)-Paul VI, 57-56, in overtime in the fifth-place bracket at the 42nd Culligan City of Palms Basketball Classic on Monday at Bishop Verot High School.
Both defenses forced the opposing offense to shoot poorly. Paul VI made 27 percent of its shots, while Mater Dei made 34 percent.
M.J. Cage of Mater Dei and Corey Manigault of Paul VI dominated in the paint. Cage collected 13 rebounds along with five blocks, and Manigault tallied 14 rebounds and also led his team in points with 21. La’Vette Parker of Mater Dei led all players with 25 points.
The game was neck and neck through four periods and overtime. Neither team could gain an edge, with seven points being the biggest lead of the game.
